Rocketship Education

INTRODUCTION

Parents inherently want their children to receive the best education possible. Typically, this means enrolling their children in private schools, which is not always financially feasible; private schools do not receive funding from federal, state, or local tax dollars and as a result, parents must pay the tuition cost required for their children to attend the school. There is, however, an alternative. Parents can opt to send their children to Charter Schools; what are charter schools? These are public schools with significant operational autonomy to pursue educational objectives, which affords them considerable authority when it comes to things like curriculum, personnel, and budget.

SUCCESS IN CHARTER SCHOOLS

Rocketship Education is a Charter school program in California, which prides themselves on tailoring their curriculum to meets the needs of their students, smaller class sizes and parental involvement. According to the Center for Research on Education Outcomes at Stanford University, Charter school students in the San Jose, California gained more than a month of additional learning in reading and math for every year they attend high-performing charters schools. The San Jose Rocketship Education Charter School program began in 2007, and because of its initial success, an additional 25 schools have since opened.

PATHWAY TO COLLEGE

Rocketship Education is proving to be a transformative power for the children attending these schools. According to an article in “San Jose Inside” many of the first-grade students that have attended these schools have since gone on to graduate high school, some have gone on to college. Studies have shown that children in charter schools thrive in smaller classes; they absorb information quicker, and they enjoy the individual attention that they are able to receive from their teachers.

CONCLUSION

In addition to educators and parents, many businesses are praising these charter school programs. In fact, Facebook has donated engineers to local charter school developer Summit Public Schools to build a personalized learning platform, and to share it with other schools. These types of initiatives will go a long way in ensuring that charter schools remain a viable option for parents, who can’t afford to send their children to private school.
